Wellness Journal iOS App

Overview

While researching patient care practices at a large hospital group, I discovered that cancer patients were still being given paper-based aftercare plans. This revealed an opportunity to design a digital tool that empowers patients to track their wellness more effectively. Over eight weeks, I created a mobile app prototype grounded in patient interviews and competitive research, offering streamlined features for tracking health data, appointments, and medications.

Challenge

Cancer patients often struggle to keep track of their wellness data while managing the emotional and physical toll of treatment. Existing apps lacked cohesive features or focused usability. My goal was to design a digital tool that empowers users to take control of their care journey, starting from diagnosis through recovery.

Approach

A hierarchical tree structure was selected as the primary system due to the information rich nature of the application.

Competitive Analysis:
Analyzed existing apps in the wellness and cancer care space to benchmark usability and feature gaps.

Research & Interviews:
Conducted 1:1 interviews with current and former cancer patients to identify common needs, emotional pain points, and task flows throughout treatment.

UX Strategy:
Synthesized findings into a project brief, user persona, sitemap, and wireframes to guide design decisions.

Outcome

The interactive prototype presents a holistic, user-first approach to managing treatment-related tasks, combining calendar sync, health tracking, and medication reminders in one intuitive interface.

Key Takeaways

  • Even limited qualitative research can profoundly shape a product’s direction.

  • Speaking directly with users revealed needs that weren’t obvious on the surface, such as emotional fatigue, fragmented tools, and the desire for simplicity during treatment.
